The Privatization of Public Safety

The debate over private security and its proper role in public safety is coming into renewed focus, as “defund the police”
has moved from a slogan to a serious shift in public policy.

Allowing and even encouraging the private sector to participate in the support of public safety has long been controversial, and is often met with a wide range of resistance. Common concerns include a perceived lack of accountability and public oversight, and disparities in the level of service available to those of varying wealth and poverty stratifications. Another issue is competency and the quality & depth of training required by private security firms in contrast to that of government law enforcement. All of these can be relevant factors, but none of them actually negate the viability and significant potential benefit of private security as a supplement to government agencies in enforcing law & order and protecting the safety of the general public.

For one, the private sector always vastly outpaces and outperforms government bureaucracy, particularly in the realm of technology and innovation, and this can lead to greatly increased efficiency as well as better overall performance. Achieving a better result at a reduced cost should be desirable to anyone in an honest evaluation. For another, however, it is quite simply an inescapable evolution as recent political pressures have grown and intensified to the point of entire municipal police departments being completely dismantled. While these changes are new and often initiated before a completed consideration of all the factors and data involved, one thing is certain; there will be gaps and shortcomings created by such deconstruction and defunding pressures, and the procurement of private security and protection services by those of means is inevitable.

In order to avoid some of the blatant segregation between those able to afford private security service and those who are not, and to ensure such privatization of protection is managed with transparency and sufficient standards of quality, it is necessary to have an honest and complete analysis of this pending transition and to engage the public sphere and the government in a mutual effort to establish acceptable roles for private security agencies in providing their services to clients as well as serving the public more generally in support of safety and the enforcement of laws and regulations. Openly defining the parameters and expectations for these roles will allow for reasonable government oversight and associated transparency to the public. This intentional integration will facilitate the communication and collaboration needed for the completion of various missions and the fulfillment of numerous responsibilities necessitated by enforcing lawfulness and protecting public safety. With such an effort, significant progress can be achieved, to the benefit of both involved members of local communities and for society at large.

Force Protection Agency (FPA) is uniquely positioned to serve these needs and cohesively connect private clients, government agencies, and the general public in the course of providing world-class protective services.
